Indiana University— Gay Lives, Straight Jobs: Sexual Orientation and Career Decision Making
The
undergraduate career services office at Indiana University’s Kelley School
of Business created a presentation to help career services professionals
better understand the issues that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender
(GLBT) students face during their job search and in the workplace.
The “Gay Lives, Straight Jobs: Sexual Orientation and Career Decision Making” program is designed as a starting point for career services professionals to use to help GLBT students address the challenges they face as they move from the supportive environment of many college campuses to the uncertainty of the workplace.
“Gay Lives, Straight Jobs: Sexual Orientation and Career Decision Making” helps career services practitioners to:
- Review issues faced by GLBT people in the workplace.
- Review issues and questions faced by gay students on coming out at work and during the job search.
- Identify valuable resources to assist gay students in evaluating companies in regards to issues of nondiscrimination and employee groups.
- Discover how to address the concerns of gay students at the career counselor level when the counselor is not gay.
- Learn how to counsel GLBT students making the transition from school to work.
