Philadelphia University— Job Search Portfolio
Philadelphia
University’s career services center created a tool that provides students
with critical job-search information and helps them to organize their
job-search efforts.
“Job Search Portfolio” includes five sections that center around activities that the center says are often overlooked by college job seekers. The sections—and materials provided in each—include:
- Communication—Tips and scripts for students to use when writing or speaking to employers; a contact log sheet to encourage note taking when a network contact is made; and a business card sleeve.
- Research/events/articles—Sample research to show students the information they should look for, while highlighting pertinent resources the career services center offers. Also includes a handout of upcoming career-related events.
- Company information/job descriptions—Specific company information with regards to the application process and job descriptions from those companies.
- Jobs applied— Handout describing how students should manage their outgoing and incoming correspondence and research for positions for which they have applied.
- Sample letters—These letters can be changed once students develop their own method.
The center created 300 copies of the “Job Search Portfolio” and distributed half to seniors during two days of walk-in appointments last September. The remaining 150 portfolios were given to seniors throughout the year during scheduled appointments.
