NACE Excellence Awards
The 2000 NACE Excellence Awards recognize outstanding accomplishments in four categories:
AUDIOVISUAL PROGRAMS
College Winner: "Career Services: It's not Just a Job...," submitted by David Holmes, Career Services, University of New Hampshire (603/862-2010).
Set to classic pop music, this video describes and markets the services of the university's career services office, including internships, interview preparation, workshops, and an alumni job line.
The video simultaneously addresses student concerns and misconceptions about these services. Incorporating commentary from upbeat students, the video depicts the career services office as inviting, accessible, and well worth a visit.
Employer Winner: No winner in 2000.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING
College Winner: "Career Advantage Competition," submitted by Cynthia M. Shore, Career Resource Center, University at Buffalo School of Management (716/645-6290).
The Career Resource Center (CRC) staff of the University at Buffalo School of Management developed this program to increase student awareness of CRC services.
During the competition, teams of M.B.A. students compete for a hypothetical job with a sponsoring employer. The competition includes a career resource scavenger hunt, requiring hands-on use of CRC resources; company and industry research; and an interview with a representative of the employer.
Employer Winner: "Arthur Andersen Tax Challenge," submitted by Dana Ellis, Arthur Andersen LLP (312/507-5318).
Via this program, Arthur Andersen LLP provides graduate and undergraduate students with exposure to real-world tax consulting scenarios.
The challenge is posed to student teams who evaluate a hypothetical client's tax profile based on past, current, and future tax data. The case involves federal tax issues confronting an individual or family with its own business. The teams vie for scholarship money awarded to their schools by the Andersen Foundation.
Honorable Mention: "Study and Work in Australia/New Zealand or the UK," submitted by Steven R. Kravinsky, Iowa State University (515/294-2542).
This program enables students to acquire career-related, paid internship experience in an international setting. Offered in conjunction with the University of North London and the University of Technology, Sydney, the program includes an he academic component--a three-credit course entitled "International Perspectives in Career Development."
PUBLICATIONS FOR STUDENTS
College Winner: "Lessons Learned: A Survival Guide for Young Alums," submitted by Amy Wilms, University of Redlands, California (909/335-4069).
For many college students, going out into the world poses its share of challenges. To facilitate that transition, student life and alumni relations staff collaborated on a guide for prospective graduates.
The handbook offers advice on such topics as finding a place to live, managing money, and achieving a work/life balance. In addition to being distributed to seniors of traditional age, the guide also is used as a textbook for an interim course for upperclassmen entitled "Real World 101: Life After College."
Employer Winner: "Your Guide to Evaluating a Job Offer," submitted by Jennifer Warne, Bart Palamara, and Michele Colletti, Towers Perrin (215/246-7709).
In this guide for college job seekers, Towers Perrin, a global management consulting firm, outlines key points to consider when weighing job offers.
The guide encourages new and recent graduates to evaluate and compare prospective employers based on total cash compensation, benefits, nature of work, professional development opportunities, work-life balance, employment stability, and organizational values.
TECHNICAL INNOVATION
College Winner: "Web-Based Career Tutorial Series," submitted by Judith Gumbiner, Career Services, San Diego State University (619/594-4379).
To provide "24/7" services to students, San Diego State's career services staff developed a series of web-based tutorials: "Job Search for Results," "Write a Great Resume," "Interview with Confidence," "The Business Etiquette Quiz," and "Do You Want To Be an Entrepreneur?"
Around-the-clock accessibility also allows students to learn at their own pace. To that end, the tutorials offer step-by-step instruction. For example, "Interview with Confidence" covers the topic in five phases.
Employer Winner: "Retailology.com," submitted by Susan Burns, Director of College Relations, and the College Relations Team for Federated Department Stores, Inc. (513/579-7571).
Developed by Federated's college relations team, retailology.com provides students with comprehensive information about career opportunities within the retail industry, specifically with Federated.
Designed to build a one-to-one relationship between the student and the company, the site incorporates streaming video, audio clips, and interactive features, such as video clips of executives discussing their experiences working for Federated.
NACE/Chevron Award
The NACE/Chevron Award for Innovative Programs in Career Services recognizes and honors a NACE college member or a regional association college member for the development of a ground-breaking program in the field.
Winning Program:"Interviewing Skills Multimedia Web Site" submitted by Maureen Beck, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. The Career Development Services (CDS) staff developed the web site in collaboration with a professor and students in a multimedia design and production class. The site is designed to help students and alumni succeed in the job-search process. Visitors to the site have three options to choose from: the interview journey, exploration, and reference.
Kauffman Award
The Kauffman Award, established by the former College Placement Council, Inc. (CPC) Board of Governors, acknowledges the accomplishments and contributions of Warren E. Kauffman, who served the association for more than 30 years. This award recognizes outstanding service to NACE.

The NACE Academy of Fellows recognizes individuals who have contributed to the career services and human resources/staffing profession through the advancement of knowledge, leadership, or excellence in professional practice.

Employer of the Year
The Employer of the Year award recognizes individuals who have contributed to the college relations and recruiting progression through exemplary service/leadership in the professional associations, advocacy of the college relations and recruitment function, and mentorship of new professionals.
