Previous Award Winners
NACE Excellence Awards
The 1998 NACE Excellence Awards recognize outstanding accomplishments in four categories:
AUDIOVISUAL PROGRAMS
Jump Start Your Career, a prerecruiting video produced by CIGNA and entered by Denise Hill, director of HR communications, was chosen as the employer winner in the audiovisual programs category. The multi-line insurance company hires about 250 new graduates from targeted universities each year. As campus visits are an important part of the program, the organization wanted a video recruiters could show students or leave behind in the career center that demonstrated the company’s culture and work environment. The 12-minute video offers testimonials from recent university hires, dispels some concerns students may have about working for an insurance company, and features some of the jobs new hires may be given.
In the college audiovisual programs category, Putting Pizzazz in Career Services TV, submitted by Art S. Harvey and Laura A. Melius, at Eastern Kentucky University, won first place. The video, a commercial about the career center, was shown on EKU’s campus television.
Honorable mentions were awarded to Returning Home: Think Success, submitted by Paul B. Klein and John B. Scanlan, assistant director of career services at Cleveland State University, and Center for Career Services, submitted by Rosalind Hoffa and Guillermo Cifuentes, Syracuse University.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING
On the employer side, first place was awarded to Recruitment Expo ’97, a two-day program of training and networking for Sprint recruiters. Developed to ensure recruiters were properly trained and had the most up-to-date hiring information possible, the program gathered recruiters, vendors, and management for seminars and exhibits. Pamela J. Urban, manager of university relations, submitted the program’s details.
Transition Tactics: A Jump Start to the Real World, is an annual three-day career conference for seniors at Elon College. Taking top honors among the college entries, the program includes a day of workshops followed by two days of work shadowing with professionals. Students apply to the career services center in their junior year and participate in the program in August during the week before school starts. The program was submitted by Bob Orndorff, director of career services.

The 35-page booklet contains a month-by-month calendar of on-campus career planning events, information on the various services offered by the career placement center, job hunting tips, a career checklist, and details on graduate school. The magazine was created to draw students to the almost-hidden career services office in the basement of the campus library.
