University of California-Berkeley

In the late 1990s, the University of California-Berkeley Career Center began exploring new ways to bolster its budget through technological innovations.

The end result was the “Web-based Employer Profile,” which assists employers in developing a competitive, cost-effective on-campus branding strategy while providing a customized recruiting message to the job-seeking student body. This innovative electronic tool was developed by director Thomas Devlin, and career center staff members, including Terre Beynart, Robert Eisman, Susan Hedgpeth, and Kathryn MacClelland.

The collaborative effort earned the team the 2001 NACE/Chevron Award. The award is presented by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and the Chevron Corporation for innovative programming in the career services field.

Via the career center web site (http://career.berkeley.edu), the Web-based Employer Profile enables participating employers to market themselves to Berkeley students with a basic employer profile, including text, hyperlinks, and company logo. The profiles remain online for 11 months, organized under five broad categories: “consulting services,” “emerging business & technical” (in business less than 10 years), “financial services,” “high tech,” and “more top employers.”

Employers may also select an “Employer of the Week” option, which highlights the company name at the web site home page for one week, or a “Tell Me More” feature, containing an icon hyperlinked to the employer profile.

Through the profiles, students gain access to employer information customized for the Berkeley campus, employers increase their visibility among potential hires, and the career center generates revenues.

In recognition for its efforts, the “Web-based Employer Profile” team received a check for $1,000 and a plaque.
