Five Takeaways From the Social Media Mashup

Spotlight for Career Services Professionals
Spotlight for Recruiting Professionals
February 6, 2013

Couldn’t attend NACE’s Social Media Mashup last week? Here are a few of the takeaways:

1. Authenticity is key in social media.
—David Spector, TMP, “The Art & Science of Social Media”

2. Don’t spread yourself thin: Don’t jump on board of the latest and greatest social media platform just because it’s there. Step back. Look at your students and culture. Unless you see a strategic plus to adding the platform, don’t.
—Eva Kubu, “Social Media Best Practices”

3. Use social media to provide students and prospective hires with information that gives them the confidence to pursue a specific career path: Offer industry information, tips, and career path information so they can see what’s next.
—Lauren Friese, “Communicating With Gen Y in 140 Characters or Less”

4. Have a social media policy in place before you need one.
—Nancy Holland, DirectEmployers Association, “Painting Happy Trees: The Art of Social Media and Mitigating Legal Risks”

5: Designing for mobile? Be thumb friendly. Design for visibility. Simplify navigation.
—Nancy Hwang, Google, “Search & Social”
