Many career centers use blogs to provide useful information to students and alumni, and to expand online resources to balance with traditional ones. Use these quick tips to successfully plan, launch, and maintain a career services blog:

    • Create a framework that everyone can use for consistency.
    • Keep your blogs short and encourage readers to “participate” by leaving feedback or by completing each blog’s call to action.
    • Be sure your audience knows where to find your blog and how to interact with it. Brand and market it.
    • Post relevant and timely content. Align topics with your events or the recruiting calendar. For example, if you have a career fair coming up, post blogs about professional dress and career fair preparation.
    • Have staff as regular contributors, but also consider students, faculty, alumni, recruiters, and others as guest bloggers to offer different perspectives. Monitor the content, but don’t stifle the individuals’ voice.
    • Look for topics everywhere, including from conversations with or feedback from students and alumni, from discussions on social media sites, or from reading various web sites or print publications.
    • Work ahead and have a supply of blogs that covers several weeks in case schedules are too busy to meet posting deadlines.
    • Monitor the blog for feedback and usage. Ask for feedback about it in your interactions with members of your campus community.
    • Reevaluate the focus on a regular basis, and make necessary adjustments.
