A bill protecting interns in New York City from sexual harassment and workplace discrimination was signed into law by the city’s mayor in mid-April. Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the law, which alters New York City’s administrative code to protect interns—whether they are paid or unpaid—in the same manner that it currently protects employees. The law goes into effect on June 14.
The new legislation was prompted by a 2013 sexual harassment case brought forth by an unpaid intern. A federal court dismissed the case, holding that the New York City Human Rights Law did not protect her because she was an unpaid intern and, therefore, not an “employee” of the company.
