BETHLEHEM, PA—Employers say they expect their college hiring levels to remain relatively flat, according to a new report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

Employers taking part in NACE’s Job Outlook Spring Update survey say they will hire 2.1 percent more new college grads from the Class of 2013 than they hired from the Class of 2012. That’s down from the 13 percent increase they projected in the fall of 2012.

Among respondents, nearly half say they plan to hire more new grads from this class than from the 2012 class, but more than one-third report plans to hire fewer new grads than they did a year ago.

“The new projection is consistent with recent job reports that show job growth is less than anticipated,” says Marilyn Mackes, NACE executive director.

About the Job Outlook Survey: The Job Outlook survey is a forecast of hiring intentions of employers as they relate to new college graduates. Each year, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) surveys its employer members about their hiring plans and other employment-related issues in order to project the market for new college graduates for the current class and to assess a variety of conditions that may influence that market.

The survey is conducted in two parts: fall and spring. This release is based on results of the spring survey, which was conducted  February 11 through March 27, 2013. The survey was distributed to 1,006 employers holding NACE membership; 196, or 19.5 percent, responded.

By region, 27 percent of respondents are from the Northeast, 30.6 percent are from the Southeast, 31.1 percent are from the Midwest, and 11.2 percent are from the West.

About NACE: Since 1956, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has been the leading source of information about the employment of college graduates.
