Coaching Power: Level-Up Your Coaching Skills With Four New Techniques
Description:
Every coach knows that activities like goal-setting, visual thinking, narrative techniques, and card-sort exercises can be helpful in the coaching process. And many have a basic knowledge of these techniques. But what if each of these techniques were redesigned based on research in the fields of positive psychology and vocational counseling? What if coaches could learn to enhance these traditional techniques so they would become game-changers for their students? And what if applying these techniques resulted in transformative performance by their students? These questions form the intended outcomes of this presentation. This Deep Dive presentation, led by Dr. Katharine Brooks and Grace Foy, will give participants the opportunity to not only observe four new research-based coaching techniques but also practice them during the session, ensuring that they will leave the session empowered with new techniques they can apply immediately to their students and alumni. Dr. Brooks has written several best-selling career books that are filled with research-based techniques for job seekers. She has worked with thousands of students over her long career in the field. Foy co-authored the first visual thinking career guide for students, "Picture Your Career," and has counseled a wide range of students and alumni from all majors at both private and public institutions. Both Brooks and Foy have successfully implemented these techniques with a diverse spectrum of students and alumni. In addition to training the participants on these new techniques, they will be offering their insights and case studies demonstrating their success with diverse students. Brooks and Foy have presented together at numerous conferences, webinars, and programs and consistently receive strong reviews for their work. The four research-based techniques include: - a different approach to goal-setting (beyond the SMART approach) that has been proven to reduce goal failure and lead to greater achievement; - a well-established visual and narrative approach to determining the ideal job; - a unique and powerful card-sort activity designed to match the students' skills with their chosen career while subsequently providing invaluable keywords for resumes and social media; and - a unique approach to "list-making" that greatly enhances the career development and exploration process. And, perhaps particularly valuable during this pandemic period of tighter budgets, not one of these techniques requires the expenditure of funds. They can be personalized for every student and redesigned to fit the specific needs of the coaching situation, thereby offering unlimited applications to a broad audience of students and/or alumni. The 90-minute Deep Dive approach will allow ample time for every participant to personally try out each technique with themselves and each other, and brainstorm potential uses and applications in their day-to-day work. Armed with these unique techniques, coaches will have new conversation points, provide a better coaching experience for their students, and will help students rapidly move beyond their present circumstances. Students who are “stuck” and coaches who feel “stuck” with them will find that these techniques breathe a new life into their work. By learning and applying these techniques, the coaches will truly become a partner to the student in designing their desired future.
