The Writing's on the Firewall: Effective Email Strategies for Employer Outreach

Every career services team succeeds or fails based on the strength of its employer relationships. Because of this, successful outreach strategies to both new and established employer partners is crucial. With the ubiquity of email communication and its tendency to overwhelm every university recruiter's inbox, career services professionals cannot afford to be lackluster in their email practices, particularly when it comes to content, timing, and context. This session will cover best practices for email outreach that cover common situations in which a career services practitioner may reach out to a prospective employer partner. Discussion will include ways of phrasing emails to get the highest response rates through opens and clicks, and considerations for geographic proximity, alumni involvement, and LinkedIn research. As the former team lead for employer relations, I have been successful in helping our career services staff establish partnerships with more than 25 different employer partners, most within the Fortune 500, who have not previously recruited from our business school. These strategies and tips I share have been critical in such success.
