Early Career Readiness through the University Onboarding Process

• Summary

  Learn how to deploy a program that can shift the paradigm. Students often wait to engage in career readiness content toward the latter half of their academic career. In this model, we flip the paradigm and begin the career readiness process at the point of admissions through their first year. At Florida Atlantic University, students are introduced to career readiness when they choose FAU, and career content is infused into the onboarding process to ensure students are getting introduced to career resources early on. This information and webinar has been widely used for Eduology, Complete College America, and Academic Impressions. Audiences have included participants from every state as well as higher education professionals in the UAE.

  Following this program, you will be able to:

  • Create a strategic vision to create a culture shift for incoming students to increase their ability to create parallel plans focused on career readiness;
  • Equip career services professionals with information about how and who to have conversations with across divisions to bring a similar model to their institution; and
  • Design a plan on how to do this at other universities with limited resources by using this model as a blueprint for success.

  Melanie Adams, Career Education & Coaching, Florida Atlantic University

  Melanie Adams has worked in higher education since 2010. She joined the national award-winning Career Center at Florida Atlantic University in 2013 and currently serves as the director of Career Education & Coaching at Florida Atlantic University. At FAU, Adams provides program development and hands-on leadership for the student services functions, including career advising, coaching, and education teams who work to assure students and alumni are career-ready and achieve meaningful internships, employment, or graduate school opportunities. Additionally, she serves as the point of contact for the Northern campuses and oversees the dynamic center-wide marketing for the Career Center. Adams oversees the operational and day-to-day management of the Career Center and represents the center with various constituencies, both on-campus and in the community. In addition, Adams teaches undergraduate career courses and is actively involved in national and state professional organizations and served on the Florida Career Development Association leadership team from 2016 – 2019. Additionally, she regularly presents regularly at national and international career conferences. Adams has more than a decade of experience in career development and is a certified Master of Career Services. She has a master’s degree in higher education administration from Florida International University and completed her undergraduate coursework at Florida Gulf Coast University.

  

  Brian Montalvo, Assistant Vice President, FAU Career Center, Florida Atlantic University

  Brian Montalvo has worked in higher education since 2000. He joined the national award-winning Career Center at Florida Atlantic University in 2006 and currently serves as the assistant vice president (AVP). As the AVP, Montalvo oversees career services at Florida Atlantic University and is recognized for his forward-leaning approach. He leverages his background, experience, and leadership skills to engage with employers, the community, faculty, and staff in support of students and alumni building toward a successful future. Montalvo is committed to the career development profession. Active with the National Career Development Association (NCDA), he was honored with a selection into their selective Leadership Academy. He served on the Board of Directors for NCDA as a trustee for higher education career coaches and specialists. NCDA recognized him as the National Practitioner of the Year in 2021. In 2020, South Florida Business and Wealth recognized him as an "up and comer" in the education sector. In addition to leading career services, Montalvo taught courses in career development at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He has published articles and a book chapter on multiple career development topics. He is a regular speaker and consultant. Most recently, Montalvo presented to the University of Wisconsin State System to discuss embedding career programs into the onboarding process. He earned an Ed.S. in counseling and human systems, an M.S. in counseling and human systems, and a B.S. in psychology, all from Florida State University. He is a National Certified Counselor and a Certified Career Counselor.
