The First-Generation Students Special Report details and compares the attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes of graduating seniors who self-identified as first generation and non-first generation. (Note: First-generation students are defined as those having a parent/parents that does/do not possess at least a bachelor’s degree.)
The report focuses on recognizing where first-generation students differ from their peers in order to implement strategies, programs, and service structures to promote their academic and career success. Among students entering the work force, differences between first-generation and non-first-generation students are evident in how they view jobs and employers. Some of these differences seem related to demographic factors affecting the two groups, e.g., first-generation students tended to be somewhat older and more racially/ethnically diverse. There is also a distinct difference between first- and non-first generation students in terms of internship type and completion, and in job search results.
This report is based on data collected through NACE’s 2016 Student Survey; data were collected from February 16, 2016, through April 30, 2016.
