About Our Coaches

NACE is pleased to announce the following coaches for the Career Coaching Intensive program. This program will be offered multiple times throughout 2008 in direct response to member requests. These individuals have all been trained by the program creator, Kate Brooks, from the University of Texas at Austin.

Kate S. Brooks

Katharine S. Brooks is the Director of Career Services for the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas in Austin, and teaches "The Liberal Arts in Management," which focuses on the direct connection between a liberal arts education and the workplace. She has provided career guidance to liberal arts students for more than 20 years. She is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Texas and Pennsylvania, a nationally certified counselor (NCC), and a certified distance career counselor (CDCC).

Brooks' expertise in career issues related to liberal arts students and careers has been recognized in nationally syndicated columns and publications. She has written numerous articles on such topics as marketing a liberal arts degree, career coaching strategies for liberal arts students, and making the most of a study abroad experience. She wrote two chapters in a book on employment in the nonprofit sector, Great Careers: The Fourth of July Guide to Careers, Internships, and Volunteer Opportunities in the Nonprofit Sector (Devon Smith, ed. Garrett Park Press, 1990).

Brooks has a doctorate in educational psychology and a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling from West Virginia University. Her bachelor's degree is in sociology and anthropology from Gettysburg College.

Craig Schmidt

Craig Schmidt is the assistant director of the career development Craig Schmidtprogram at the University of California, San Diego’s Career Services Center. He has more than 20 years of experience as a career counselor, workshop presenter, and program manager.  He is an original member of the UC San Diego Student Affairs Successful Student Services Training team responsible for developing and presenting customer service oriented training for new student affairs employees; a developer and instructor for the UC San Diego Career Services Center’s "Introduction to Career Development” for-credit course; and co-author of a chapter in e-Portfolios: Emerging Opportunities for Student Affairs (Jossey-Bass, 2007). Schmidt holds a master’s in educational counseling from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  His bachelor’s degree is in psychology from Maryville University in St. Louis.

Meg Flournoy

Meg FlournoyMeg Flournoy is an associate director of the Career Management Center at the The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Flournoy works primarily with students pursuing the financial services industry, although she also works extensively with undecided M.B.A. students.  Flournoy developed coaching skills through positions at the University of Maryland, University College, Muhlenberg College, and Lafayette College. Over the past 15 years, she has worked with undergraduate liberal arts students, engineering students, and evening graduate school students. She has also worked with divisions of companies on the topics of staff development, self assessment, and team building. Flournoy holds a master's degree in counseling psychology from Lehigh University, and a bachelor's degree in political science from Susquehanna University.  She is past president of the Susquehanna University alumni association.

 

Deb BashawDeb Bashaw

Deb Bashaw is the director of Career Services at Harding University. She is a graduate of Harding with a bachelor’s degree in music and an M.B.A.  She is also an instructor for the University of Liverpool, teaching organizational behavior, business leadership, and corporate strategy in the online M.B.A. program, an instructor at Harding University in the degree completion program, and in the College of Business.  Bashaw is certified by the University of Oklahoma in training and development, and has developed and conducted supervisory training sessions in various topics including, interviewing skills for the supervisor, coaching and feedback, sexual harassment, and customer service.  She holds membership in the Arkansas, Southern and National Associations of Colleges and Employers. She is also a member of the National Resume Writer's Association, the Professional Resume Writer's Association, and the Career Management Alliance.

Brad Shuck

Brad ShuckBrad Shuck is the associate director for career development and management in the Career Services Office at Florida International University. As the associate director, he oversees all aspects of the career exploration, counseling, advising, experiential learning, and development processes for all students and alumni. In addition to his work in the career services area, Shuck has worked in residential life, leadership development, student conduct, and alumni services. Shuck attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky where he received bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology, and his master’s of education degree in counseling and student affairs. He is pursuing a doctorate in adult education and human resource development with a cognate in leadership development. Shuck has expertise in program design and adult learning strategies. He has been an invited speaker on the national and regional level on topics such as leadership development, transformative learning, adult learning strategies, and employee engagement.
