A look at unemployment rates over the past year shows an improving job market for new college graduates.
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that unemployment rates* for bachelor’s degree holders ages 20 to 24 not only have dropped month over month from September through November 2011—from 8.3 percent to 6.2 percent—but also over the past year. (See Figure 1.) For example, the rates for the most recent three months all dipped in comparison to their 2010 counterparts:
- From 9.4 percent in September 2010 to 8.3 percent in September 2011
- From 8.5 percent in October 2010 to 7.7 percent in October 2011
- From 8.6 percent in November 2010 to 6.2 percent in November 2011
