Regardless of how employers ran their programs in summer 2021, the hybrid model is their favored modality for their 2021-22 internships, according to NACE’s 2022 Internship & Co-op Survey Report.

Overall, 46.8% of employers plan to provide a hybrid experience, 25.8% will hold internships exclusively in-person, and just 2.2% are planning internships that are fully virtual. The remaining 25.3% were still deciding at the time of the survey. (See Figure 1.)

Among those that were exclusively virtual in 2020-21, a majority (51.5%) are shifting to a hybrid model; those that were in-person or hybrid in 2020-21 also favor the hybrid model for 2021-22 (44%). (See Figure 2.)

An interesting anomaly: Those that held exclusively virtual programs in 2020-21 seemed to have more time to decide about the modality of their 2021-22 internships; at the time of the survey, more than 38% were still deciding about the nature of their program for 2021-22 compared to about 17% of those that held hybrid or in-person programs in 2020-21.

NACE’s 2022 Internship & Co-op Survey Report provides projections for internship and co-op programs for the 2021-22 academic year, but the bulk of the information presented here represent data gathered from 2020-21 internship and co-op programs. Historical data are also provided to indicate trends. Data collection took place from November 10, 2021, to January 12, 2022. There were 183 NACE member respondents representing 22.4% of eligible member respondents. The Internship & Co-op Survey was also distributed to nonmember companies from which an additional 26 responses were received. The 2022 Internship & Co-op Survey Report is available to participants on MyNACE.
