  • Employers Hold to New College Graduate Hiring, Summer Internships—Mostly

    BETHLEHEM, PA—Throughout April, employers responded to the coronavirus pandemic by making decisions regarding the status of their summer internship and college recruiting programs, according to the final results of a month-long poll conducted by the National Association of College’s and Employers (NACE).

    NACE’s April Coronavirus Quick Poll—the second in a series of surveys the association is conducting to assess the impact of the pandemic on college recruiting—revealed that just 4.4 percent of participating employers reported revoking their offers to the new college graduates they had recruited prior to the pandemic for full-time positions to start following graduation. However, more than one-fifth—22 percent—indicated that they are revoking their offers to interns for the summer.

    “With the uncertainty that continues to surround the economy and the job market during this pandemic, employers are cutting budgets, which may result in internship programs being scaled back or temporarily suspended,” explains Shawn VanDerziel, NACE’s executive director.

    “Fortunately, the more common response we are seeing is that many employers are moving their summer internship program to the virtual space or reducing the length of internships by delaying their start date.”

    Making the shift to the virtual space is the most common adaptation employers are making to their internship programs. In fact, the percentage of employers moving interns to virtual has grown from 36 percent at the beginning of April to 46 percent by the month’s end.

    Likewise, the percentage of employers shortening the length of their internship programs has increased during April, from 35 percent at the beginning of the month to 41 percent at the end of the month.

    About NACE’s April 2020 Coronavirus Quick Poll: The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) conducted a poll through the end of April to delve into college recruiting and hiring plans, and to track changes to internship programs. Due to the fluidity of the situation, respondents could return to the survey each week to change their answers to reflect the changes in their office’s policies, providing a more accurate snapshot of what is happening in real-time. Through May 1, 331 employer members of NACE and 108 nonmember companies responded. NACE posted final results from the April poll on its website. NACE launched a third poll on May 4, which will cover planning for fall 2020; it will run through May 31. Updates on results from the poll will be available weekly in May (May 11, 18, 26), with final results posted on June 1.
