      Join your colleagues at the NACE Recruiter Leadership Institute, January 9 and 10 in Carlsbad, California, to learn evidence-based leadership strategies needed to excel within the field of university relations and recruiting (URR). Designed for emerging and aspiring leaders, this two-day program provides attendees with the skills needed to leverage their leadership skills to build a stronger URR team, resulting in greater organizational success.

      Facilitated by experienced university recruiters and NACE staff, attendees will gain insight into practices of excellence to explore concepts related to the URR function, program development, program assessment, and relationship management, while participating in highly interactive activities with their unique cohort.

      Through examination of individual 360 evaluation results, attendees will identify leadership behaviors that elevate their position within their respective organizations and create a professional development plan for continued growth, which contributes to both individual and organizational outcomes.

      Following this program, you will be able to:

      • Define and articulate the role of the URR recruiter in relation to organizational success;
      • Analyze the process for developing a strong URR program;
      • Maximize your impact on campus;
      • Develop an action plan for continued URR development;
      • Explore methods for creating a highly successful team;
      • Explore best practices that contribute to progressing in the field as a leader; and
      • Develop an action plan for continued development.

      In addition, you'll know how to:

      • Describe The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership;
      • Differentiate between management and leadership;
      • Examine and model behaviors of exemplary leaders;
      • Analyze the meaning and value of individual leadership;
      • Construct an action plan to develop and expand your leadership skills;
      • Analyze LPI as instrument to measure leadership;
      • Identify leadership behavior threads; and
      • Evaluate individual leadership rankings.

      Chris Carlson

      Chris Carlson, Director, Talent Acquisition & Diversity, Tennessee Valley Authority

      Christopher Carlson is the President-Elect on the NACE Board of Directors in 2018-19.

      Chris Carlson is director of talent acquisition and diversity for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), where he leads a team of professionals focused on delivering best-in-class recruitment and diversity solutions. Prior to TVA, Carlson was senior manager of talent acquisition for Booz Allen Hamilton. He has also held a number of recruiting and consulting roles within the consulting, entertainment, and nonprofit industries.

      Erin DeStefanis
      Erin DeStefanis, Director, Professional Development, NACE

      Erin DeStefanis, director of professional development at NACE, leads education strategy and instructional design to support the mission and strategic plan for members of the National Association of Colleges and Employers. With 19 years of experience as an educator, career coach, and leader, Erin is an advocate for life-long learning. She holds a masters in curriculum and instruction from the University of Mississippi and is a Board Certified Coach.

      Glen Fowler

      Glen Fowler, NACE President, Recruiting & Training Manager, California State Auditor

      Glen Fowler was the President of the 2017-18 NACE Board of Directors.

      Glen Fowler, a Past President of NACE, is the recruiting and training manager for the California State Auditor’s office, an organization he joined in 1997. There, he not only develops strategy for the office’s recruiting program, but also takes part in recruiting events to ensure strategy and practice mesh. In addition, Fowler was instrumental in initiating the organization’s mentor program to promote successful onboarding and retention.

      In addition to serving as President of the 2017-18 NACE Board of Directors, Fowler’s service to the association includes roles as Director-Employer on the Board and as a member of various committees and teams, including the 21st Century Career Services Model Team, Conference Committee, Sourcing and Nomination Committee, Finance and Audit Committee, and Awards and Honors Committee. In addition, Fowler has been active in developing key frameworks for the profession: In 2012, he served as part of an advisory group that developed NACE’s professional standards for university relations and recruiting, and, in 2016, he served on a team that developed competencies for university relations and recruiting professionals on behalf of NACE. Fowler is also involved in mentoring those new to the field.

      Fowler has been active at the regional level as well, providing leadership as President of the Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers, and helping to develop the association’s 3i Program, which supports innovative programming in career services and recruiting.

      Fowler earned a B.A. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s degree in public management from the California State University, Sacramento. He is also a member of the National State Auditors Association.

      Carlena (CJ) Harris

      Carlena (CJ) Harris, Manager, Talent Acquisition and Organizational Development, Luminex Corporation

      Carlena "CJ" Harris has been in the technology industry for more than 24 years. Harris obtained her undergraduate degree in information systems technology from the University of Houston-University Park and her graduate degree in organizational leadership and ethics from St. Edwards University. Previously, she was the director of talent development at Terefic and the owner of Brickhouse International, a human resource consulting firm. Previously, Harris was a human resource recruiting manager at National Instruments. She was responsible for recruiting engineers and technical talent from various universities. In addition to being a director on the NACE Board of Directors, Harris is a cycle team captain for the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure, and the proud mother of two teenagers who keep her smiling, motivated, and inspired.
