Intern Dashboard Offers Protiviti an Efficient Way to Share Performance in Offer Decisions

In 2024, Protiviti created a PowerBI dashboard to holistically evaluate the performance of more than 300 of its interns and share the data with leadership teams to use when considering full-time offers.

“Pulling from several different data sources, this dashboard allowed for visualization of all points of performance evaluation feedback provided to the intern and feedback collected from interactions with their advisers and project colleagues,” explains Casey Jo Chapman, Protiviti early career recruiting leader.

“The dashboard allowed for confirmation that all interns were receiving timely feedback  from their project teams, training facilitators, and advisers on individual career development progression.”

Protiviti’s internship recruiting team had been seeking an efficient way to monitor and share intern performance while continuing to aid in removing bias from the equation of determining full-time offer decisions for qualified individuals following graduation.

Chapman says that recruiters had been tasked with routinely reviewing multiple data sources to ensure interns received timely, documented feedback and were meeting with their adviser teams.

“Nearing the internship's end, recruiters met with leaders to share intern performance data to gain full-time offer approval,” she notes.

“This required recruiters to compile information from many sources and databases, a historically time-consuming manual process with the potential for errors.”

To overcome this, Protiviti compiled all feedback into one dashboard, enabling decisions to be made at the conclusion of the internship based on accurate and comprehensive data.

“This dashboard also helps recruiters easily identify interns who had not received feedback from their engagement teams to ensure a consistent experience for all and allow for potential performance concerns to be addressed in real-time,” Chapman adds.

“Protiviti had a robust performance management platform; however, that platform only encompassed a portion of the data used to make offer decisions. Our goal was to create a dashboard that would be easy to navigate, easy to digest, have varying filter capabilities, and would include all points of performance evaluations and feedback for interns.”

In addition, the dashboard needed to update on a regular basis to enable recruiters to quickly respond to leaders’ questions or requests for additional information.

The Intern Performance & Feedback Dashboard includes three separate views of the data:

  • The intern overview provides all relevant information for each intern, including their academic discipline, aligned internal business capability area, adviser team, and project schedule.
  • The feedback status allows recruiters and leaders to view feedback from facilitators at The Intern Challenge (first-week training experience), the number of engagement snapshots (project evaluations), the average engagement snapshot rating, confirmation of career adviser check-in, career adviser recommendation for an offer, confirmation of executive adviser check-in, and the executive adviser recommendation for an offer.
  • The feedback detail pulls all the details from engagement snapshots, The Intern Challenge feedback, the career adviser check-in, the executive adviser check-in, and additional feedback submitted from others who have worked with the intern or have interacted in the local markets.

All three views are able to be filtered and sorted by office, region, business solution, or intern name for ease of reviewing.

Of 341 interns in Protiviti’s 2024 summer cohort, the Feedback & Performance Dashboard collected in one location:

  • 616 engagement snapshots (project evaluations);
  • 311 practice feedback submissions (interactions on projects or in local office);
  • 190 formalized executive adviser feedback forms; and
  • 226 formalized career adviser feedback forms.

“While the data points remained consistent with those of previous years, the integration of the dashboard transformed how Protiviti recruiters interacted with their interns,” Chapman explains.

“Centralizing relevant data on a single platform empowers recruiters to engage more effectively with interns by consistently reviewing up-to-date information. It eliminates the need for manual tracking, streamlining the entire process. Equipped with accurate and real-time data, recruiters approach meetings with leadership about potential full-time offers with a higher level of preparedness and confidence.”

The Protiviti Intern Performance & Feedback Dashboard improved efficiency and enhanced decision-making, ensuring discussions regarding full-time placements were both informed and strategic. It allowed for consistent data to be applied in all decisions, enabling a consistent evaluation process for all being considered for full-time employment and mitigating unconscious bias.

This dashboard was used by 20 recruiters and evaluated by 28 market leaders, regional managing directors, global capability leaders, and senior business leaders on the intern leadership team. Using the information collected in the dashboard, Protiviti extended full-time offers to 84% of its 2024 interns. The firm also welcomed 62 transfers to other geography or business solutions than where they assigned for their summer due to the consistent review of offer decisions.

For 2025, Protiviti switched performance evaluation tools and held conversations to ensure that functionality continues to be prioritized when rolling out the new data sources. The team also shared the feedback it received to add the Protiviti Human Resources Performance Evaluation Group to further look at their tracking for current employees in a similar consolidated way.

“The PowerBI Performance Dashboard serves as a powerful tool for Protiviti recruiters, providing comprehensive access to crucial data points,” Chapman points out.

“This visibility allows recruiters to effectively track performance evaluations and feedback in real-time. Additionally, they are able to ensure interns received prompt and constructive feedback on their projects and from their adviser teams, fostering continuous improvement and growth.”
