SUBJECT:
Beyond the Paycheck: What the Class of 2026 Really Wants From an Employer
BETHLEHEM, PA—With economic uncertainty and a job market that is in flux, it’s no surprise that Class of 2026 college graduates are searching for jobs that offer stability, support, and room to grow, according to new research from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
NACE’s 2026 Student Survey revealed that the top five attributes Class of 2026 graduates want in an employer are an opportunity for career growth and advancement, a good insurance/benefits package, job security, friendly coworkers, and a high starting salary.
From this list, it appears these grads are playing the long game. Because they are entering a job market that is shaped by AI, a growing emphasis on skills, and changing expectations for early talent, they are not just looking for a first job; they are looking for a strong start.
In particular, today’s college graduates want to work for employers that will invest in them and their future, says Shawn VanDerziel, NACE president and chief executive officer.
“Career growth is especially important to new college graduates, which means employers need to show clear pathways for advancement, provide meaningful support, and help early talent see how they can build a future within the organization. Doing this well can also support retention and long-term commitment,” VanDerziel explains.
Students are also focused on economic security.
“Salary matters, of course, but graduates are looking beyond the paycheck. Strong benefits and job security factor into how they evaluate an offer,” he says.
Finally, who new college graduates work with matters. They want their work life to be populated by friendly coworkers.
“Of course,” VanDerziel adds, “perks can still add to the employee experience, but graduates seem less swayed by the ‘nice-to-have’ extras. A casual dress policy may be appreciated, but is unlikely to outweigh the fundamentals: growth, stability, and financial well-being.”
